ESA AlpsTomoSAR (2014)

In collaboration with scientists from the Politechnico Milano and Metasensing GmbH, ENVEO carried out an airborne tomographic L-band SAR field campaign on the Pitztal Glacier.

More than 40 parallel tracks were acquired at L-band in order to map the internal structure of the upper Mittelbergferner by applying tomographic techniques. Parallel to the airborne SAR acquisitions measurements of the physical properties of the winter snow pack and the underlying firn and glacier ice as well as ground observations of the internal glacier structure by means of Ground Penetrating Radar were carried out. The field experiment is funded by ESA and supports the scientific exploitation of the Argentinian SAOCOM (SAR Observation & Communications Satellite) constellation comprising two L-band SAR satellites for new cryospheric observations.
